PBS member station WOUB-TV received a $255,283 federal grant for its high-definition upgrade. The matching-fund grant will be used by the WOUB Center for Public Media at Ohio University for digital television gear for producing local high-definition content for the primary HD channels of public television stations WOUB in Athens and WOUC-TV in Cambridge. WOUB obtained the other half of the money for the project from the state of Ohio’s eTech program. The federal funding came through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration Public Telecommunications Facilities Program.

Ohio University's WOUB, which provides radio and television public broadcasting services to the region, is one of 12 initial Public Broadcasting Service stations participating in the PBS Digital Learning Library.
The online library will consist of video, audio, images, games and interactive simulations for use in pre K-12 classrooms, but it also will be free to the public. Officials expect the library will open in late fall or early winter.

WOUB Honored by Tellys
WOUB’s documentary “The 8th Wonder: The Waterloo Wonders” was given the bronze honor by the Telly Awards.
The documentary, produced and directed by Cheri Russo, WOUB News managing editor and edited by Nick Parsons, premiered in November 2008 on WOUB-TV. The program tells the story of a basketball team from Waterloo, Ohio, who came from obscurity to take the Class B state championship in 1934 and 1935. The documentary shows how a small group of farm boys from Waterloo overcame obstacles to give hope to a region that had suffered greatly during one of the most difficult times in American history.

WOUB.org Woes
Do public broadcasters need to invest in their websites?
That is the question. At the moment many of them use Public Interactive, which provides a template allowing NPR affiliates to easily update content from the mothership in D.C. But why would I go to my local station's website for news from NPR when I could to npr.org? It's great for NPR to have it's site linked to an affiliate but what good does it do the affiliate?

WOUB To End Some Analog Transmission
Effective June 15, 2008, WOUB-TV/DT will discontinue transmissions from its analog translators in Loudonville (channel 65) and Millersburg (channel 69) in conjunction with WOUB’s ongoing conversion to digital. The early shut off of the analog signal in Loudonville and Millersburg is part of the Federal Communications Commission’s mandate that all broadcasting operations become digital effective February 17, 2009. WOUB’s digital signal now covers those two areas.

Media Reform to WOUB?
It's no secret that the commercial media are all too typically mere divisions in larger corporations, the media themselves are becoming increasingly consolidated, already under-resourced news departments are losing support, and local media across the country are reducing their direct coverage of local and regional events, as they rely on feeds from above. As a result, the range of perspectives and analysis of important events are becoming less diverse.
