Ohio Valley Emmy Board Member Barry Bernson About to Bust a Move

Barry Bernson is about to bust a move.

The Fox-41 morning show co-anchor is the newest addition to Canfield Development's second annual "Dancing With the Stars: Derby Style" event.

"I am going to kick some butt. I just hope it is not my partner's butt that I kick," said Bernson, who will partner with professional dancer Viktoria Szukk of All That Dance.

Eat Sleep and Live Your Brand

One of our great speakers at our Silver Circle Professional Development Seminar, Mayra Ruiz McPherson, wrote a great article on one of our newest NATAS - Ohio Valley members, Cole Imperi.

Here's the link!

Louisville Reporter Suffers Brain Aneurysm

It’s with a heavy heart that I tell you that WHAS11’s Chuck Olmstead suffered a brain aneurysm on Sunday. EDIT: He’s currently hospitalized, under medically necessary sedation.

I don’t know anyone in Louisville media who is as fun or enjoyable as Chuck. Everyone we speak with about him has super-nice things to say. And everyone loves his hilarious and tenacious personality.

Columbus' Jym Ganahl Calls Global Warming a Fallacy

Published in The Other Paper, Columbus OH -

Just when you thought it was safe to assume that everyone had pretty much accepted climate change and moved on, here comes rogue NBC 4 chief meteorologist Jym Ganahl to blow your freaking mind.

“Just wait 5 or 10 years, and it will be very obvious. They’ll have egg on their faces,” Ganahl said this week of global warming advocates.

The “global warming hoax” is an obvious fallacy, Ganahl said in a YouTube video posted Jan. 23.

More Personnel Changes at WLKY

There’s even more news to report about personnel changes at WLKY-TV, though at least none of it involves the local police.

The station has hired a new full-time reporter. Erin Haynes began her TV career as an intern at the station before moving on to stations in Louisiana and Terre Haute, Ind. (WTHI-TV). Haynes has been living in Louisville and has already started working on Mellwood Avenue.

Bulleit Goes Bye Bye

Having read Jim Bulleit’s side of this story, it’s a shame that his career in TV is ending this way. But the WLKY-TV reporter says he believes it’s time to move on, and take another shot at stand-up comedy. I hope to be in the audience when that happens.

You can say what you want about his story about the candy eggs at Kroger, but I tend to believe him. You can read it and judge for yourself. Here, in Bulleit’s own words, is his story:

WLKY's Bulleit Banned from Kroger's

This is a weird one. Jim Bulleit, the morning reporter at WLKY-TV, was arrested at a Prospect Kroger Tuesday and charged with shoplifting and criminal trespassing. It wasn’t his first run-in with the store.

We know there’s more to this story, but here’s what is in the police report.

Are Plasma TV's Going Extinct?

The end of the Pioneer Kuro line of TVs represented a true tipping point in the TV industry, one preceded by long-gestating momentum from opposing forces. The recession and LCDs tipped over plasmas for good, and the slope downward will be quite steep, and fast.

Last week, Pioneer announced it was killing off its critically acclaimed TV business by March 2010 and will concentrate on car and audio/visual systems. It was a dramatic fall for a company that just one year ago had CES abuzz with its newest plasma TV, the so-called “Ultimate Black” Kuro.

Smooth Transition to DTV Bodes Well for June Switch

For television executives, the early rush by 421 stations to switch to digital-only signals last week was an I-told-you-so moment, even if their public statements were more gracious.

Despite a push for postponement, a majority of stations that made the transition to digital-only signals on Tuesday had a relatively problem-free move.

Good News, Bad News on DTV Switch

Barbara Craig loves the sharpness of her digital TV picture - until it freezes up when a Metro bus goes by her Walnut Hills apartment.

Or a firetruck goes by.

"In the afternoon, the buses run 15 minutes apart. It's a real headache," says Craig, 53, who lives in a second-floor apartment on busy William Howard Taft Road.

Craig is one of many Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky viewers frustrated trying to receive finicky digital TV over the air.

WSTR Pulls Analog Plug

And then there was one. WSTR-TV (Channel 64) will be the only area station to cut off analog broadcasting at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

Over the weekend, managers of WPTD-TV (Channel 16), Dayton’s public TV station, decided not to turn off analog. On Friday, all other Dayton stations changed their minds, and announced they would continue broadcasting both analog and digital into spring.

“We are, of course, concerned that all the station’s regional viewers have access to the station’s broadcast service. In addition, we were concerned that the transition by only one station in the market would cause confusion,” says David Forgarty, president and general manager of ThinkTV.

WXIX's Williams Staying After All

Never mind! Morning co-anchor Rob Williams isn't bolting for Detroit after all, as folks have been saying around WXIX-TV (Channel 19) since September.

Williams, 39, renewed his Fox 19 contract last week after the Detroit job apparently fell though.

"Everyone is kind of relieved that I'm staying," he says.

Will an Ohio Lawfirm Change the Internet as We Know it?

Last year, Blockshopper.com, a website that tracks real estate transactions in various parts of the country, noted that two attorneys had (separately) purchased properties in Chicagoland. In reporting the transactions, Blockshopper linked to the attorneys' profiles that were on the attorneys' law firm's website.

Former WCPO Reporter Eyes Seat on City Council

Laure Quinlivan is interested in seeking a seat on City Council in this fall’s election, according to a report on Ohio Daily, a progressive political blog. It states that Quinlivan hosted a small planning meeting Feb. 5 and told attendees that she’ll be running this year with the backing of key Democratic leaders.

Quinlivan left WCPO in November 2007 as part of budget cuts.

WBKI to Partially Shut off Analog Signal

Most Louisville-area television stations apparently will wait until June to shut down their analog broadcasts, but at least one station will partially meet next week's original digital changeover deadline.

WBKI -- The CW Louisville plans to keep Channel 28's analog signal in the metro area through June 12, the new date granted by Congress to U.S. broadcasters. But its analog signal on Channel 34, which covers about 30 counties outside Jefferson County, will go dark next Tuesday.

Columbus Anchor Gets the Giggles During Newscast

Channel 4’s 11 o’clock broadcast last Thursday night was shocking—not because of the content of any particular news segment, but because the always-composed Colleen Marshall broke down in a fit of the giggles.

“Actually, I do get the giggles, I just try to hide it all the time,” said Marshall in a phone interview from her office on Tuesday, still laughing a little bit. “Thank God it wasn’t a serious story I was reading, because I couldn’t get through it.”
