Columbus' television news operations typically focus on what has happened in central Ohio in the preceding hours, minutes and, in some cases, seconds.
WBNS-TV (Channel 10) says it's going to look forward, too -- way forward.
The station, which is owned by The Dispatch's parent company, has announced that it will explore the region's future in a yearlong multimedia initiative dubbed Central Ohio 2015, A Community Visioning Project.

WHAS Crusade for Children Raises 42K
A special telethon for the WHAS Crusade for Children had raised $42,146 as of early Tuesday, Crusade president and chief executive officer Dawn Lee said.
“We felt it (the telethon) went really well, especially for the first one” specifically for the Crusade’s endowment fund, Lee said.
She said more pledges are expected before the books are closed on the telethon.

Ohio Political Blogosphere Featured on PBS Show
Hey, Ohio political blogosphere, are your ears burning? Somebody’s been talking about you behind your back. A couple of blogs/bloggers were even singled out by name. Ohio’s PBS stations broadcast a half-hour-long weekend show (schedules vary, so check your local PBS or Ohio Channel listings) called “The State of Ohio,” hosted by Karen Kasler.

New WHAS-TV Strategy on Streaming
After we pointed out the copyright violation earlier this week, when WHAS-TV was streaming its entire programming schedule online, the station has wisely come up with a new strategy.

TV Needs to Join the Net Neutrality Fight
Most TV stations have lively local Web sites, offering a continuous flow of headlines, stories, video clips and weather reports.
You have to look no further than Gordon Borrell's last study on local online advertising to understand why.
The study forecasts that total local online ad spending will jump from $8.7 billion last year to $13.1 billion this year.
It's been a sometimes painful process, but broadcasters are beginning to see themselves as more than just broadcasters.

TV's Future Looks Like Web's Present
TV advertising is poised to change dramatically over the next decade, embracing the kind of targeting and user control already common on the Web, according to a new report by Forrester Research.
Forrester lays out a decade-long evolution that will ultimately result in most programming delivered on-demand with targeted ad messages based on location and behavior, along with community functions.

ESPN launches HS Sports Site
ESPNrise.com has launched, joining the fray of high school sports sites battling for attention. Unlike many local high school sports efforts, ESPNrise.com takes a broader approach, focusing on states and regions instead of drilling down on individual high schools and all the rich data that comes with it. But it comes with all the usual community functionality, from discussion to user blogs, and soon you’ll be able to upload video, too.

Monitoring Social Media - Unravel the Web Chatter
People are talking about your brand online, but what are they saying and how do you find them, asks Robert Gray.
According to a report released by E-consultancy this month, the UK market for online reputation and buzz monitoring will grow by around 30 per cent in 2008, to an estimated value of pounds 60m. That this bullish outlook comes at a time of broader economic uncertainty illustrates the growing importance that brands and organisations are attaching to blogs, forums and other social media.
Over the past couple of years a new wave of online reputation monitoring tools have been established in response to increasing media fragmentation, changing consumer behaviour and the increasing breadth of different consumer channels. E-consultancy's Online Reputation and Buzz Monitoring Buyer's Guide 2008 concludes that it is no longer feasible just to monitor online reputation manually. Moreover, as technology improves, organisations are getting more value from their monitoring services.

SEC and CBS Bundle Rights for Digital Future
CBS and the Southeastern Conference have extended their broadcast contract by 15 years, an unprecedented length for a collegiate deal, but more impressive than the length of the contract is its breadth. Beginning with the 2009-10 season, CBS Sports will continue to be the exclusive network broadcaster of SEC home football and regular-season basketball games, but the contract announced last week also covers digital, Internet, wireless, video-on-demand, data, and highlight rights across all CBS platforms, including the CBS College Sports Network.

Rupert Murdoch Buys Minority Stake in Columbus' Palestra.com
Heading back to college this fall? Rupert Murdoch will be waiting.
In May, his Fox News subsidiary bought a minority stake in a Web video-based college news network featuring student reporters called Palestra.net. This fall, he'll be ramping up the partnership.
It's the latest--and boldest--move by a major media company to capitalize on America's some 6.1 million undergrads. While outlets such as Viacom's (nyse: VIA - news - people ) MTVU network and privately owned Zilo Networks have gone after university students for years, Palestra's at the front of a new wave led by news outlets desperate to connect with young viewers.

WXIX Does Viewers a Big Favor
The Cincinnati Enquirer’s John Kiesewetter - who happens to have one of the most interesting blogs in Cincinnati for TV/radio and local TV/radio history junkies - has a nice post about what WXIX-TV (FOX19) is doing this month as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.

What Stations Need for Media Content
This week in Los Angeles, NATPE holds its annual LATV Festival, bringing together around a thousand content creators with agents, studio and network executives and new media experts.
Because of its origins as the TV Producers Boot Camp, many of the content creators are relative newcomers — making the LATV Festival a unique opportunity for both seasoned pros and ambitious raw talent to inform and assist one another.
