For Louisville Local TV, Sweeps Still Important

Trust me, the local TV stations are still going to be pulling out their big guns for the TV ratings sweeps this month, but no matter what happens it's not going to mean much to the stations' bottom line.

There are plenty of reasons. First, there's no valid comparisons to last February, when the country's TV viewers were all worked up over the digital transition, and Nielsen put off the ratings period to March.

Rachael Ray to Air Special Filmed in Wilmington Nov. 25

Rachel Ray, Nick Lachey Coming To Wilmington

Posted by jkiesewetter

October 29th, 2009, 7:04 pm

Emmy-winner Rachel Ray brings her daytime talk show – and Nick Lachey – to Wilmington the weekend of Nov. 6-8 to improve a soup kitchen and host an early Thanksgiving dinner. She plans to provide “a Ray of hope” to Wilmington residents who lost their jobs with the closing of DHL and ABX Air by renovating and restocking a food pantry and soup kitchen on Saturday Nov. 7.

Then on Sunday, she’ll throw “a Thanksgiving feast filled with surprises” at the Roberts Convention Centre, says her publicist, Lauren Nowell. The weekend activities will be condensed into a one-hour show broadcast Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving and the final day of the November ratings’ “sweeps,” Nowell says.

“Rachel Ray” airs at 2 p.m. weekdays on Channel 5, and at noon on Dayton’s Channel 22.

Comedian Jay Leno performed two free concerts for unemployed Clinton County residents at the Roberts Convention Centre on May 10.

The Other Paper Accuses Columbus Stations of Going Overboard on the Swine Flu

Facing the possibility of a global pandemic during May sweeps week, local news stations boldly posed the tough question to public health officials charged with the community’s well-being.

How do parents draw the line between a child who is sick, and a child who is deathly ill, for example, asked WBNS 10TV’s Jerry Revish.

WKRC's Wheel of Justice Spins Again

Local12’s “Wheel of Justice” will take another spin in Butler County.

This time the segment hosted by WKRC-TV crime reporter Deborah Dixon will be filmed at Harbin Park on Hunter Road in Fairfield.

“We want to celebrate the community, and this police department and catch bad guys,” Dixon said.

The “Wheel of Justice” — which features area fugitives — started to make community appearances in March with a series of four excursions. After a brief spring break, Fairfield will be the second of a series of four more community trips.

WSYX's "Gotcha" Gets Lampooned in Other Paper

Napoleon once said that the press corps is to be feared more than a thousand bayonets.

That’s likely what WSYX 6 On Your Side Problemsolver Tom Bosco had in the back of his mind as he hit the streets of Worthington in Monday night’s strong, publicly-spirited and subtly titled investigative piece, “Gotcha.”

Cincinnati Sweeps Results

Lots of new TV episodes - thanks to the writers back at work - didn't bring all of us back to TV during May "sweeps" month.
Prime-time viewing was down 6 percent from May a year ago for ABC, CBS and NBC here - after tumbling 20 percent in February due to the 100-day writers' strike.
Local TV station managers worried in February that viewers had found alternative entertainment during the strike, and might not return to network shows.

WBNS Wins Sweeps

CBS and its Columbus affiliate, WBNS-TV (Channel 10), maintained their ratings dominance in the just-concluded TV season -- as the competition grew fiercer.
The season, capped by the May "sweeps," was affected significantly by the writers strike, leaving reality shows on Fox and ABC to dominate the prime-time ratings.

Broadcast Networks Under Siege

Declining viewers and cable's subscriber-fee revenue advantage are forcing TV executives to consider radical changes in the way they do business.

Fox Captures May Sweeps for First Time

With a strong finishing kick from American Idol, Fox captured the distinction of America's most popular television network for the first time since it began operation in 1987.

ABC on a Roll in May Sweeps

With CBS’s “Survivor” already done for the season, ABC lengthened its lead on the final Thursday of sweeps, finishing well ahead of second-place NBC for its fourth straight May sweeps Thursday victory.
Last night ABC averaged a 4.5 adults 18-49 rating and 12 share, according to Nielsen overnights, 29 percent ahead of second-place NBC’s 3.5/9. CBS, which aired a repeat of “CSI” in place of “Survivor” at 8 p.m., finished third for the night at 3.4/9, a week after challenging ABC for the nightly lead.

Louisville Stations Get Big Ratings During Derby

On Saturday, WAVE-TV dominated the local airwaves most of the afternoon, peaking during the Kentucky Derby with a rating of 39.9. Its one-hour telecast from 5-6 p.m. drew a 35.6, but the peak quarter-hour nearly burst through the 40-mark.

FOX Boosts Sweeps Lead

Last night wasn’t Fox’s strongest Wednesday outing, but it was more than enough for the network to stomp the competition and pad its May sweeps lead.
Fox averaged a 5.0 adults 18-49 rating and a 14 share last night, according to Nielsen overnights, 85 percent ahead of second-place CBS’s 2.7/7.

ABC Holds Onto Sweeps Lead

ABC held its Thursday lead for the second straight week, though it was down from last week, when it debuted a new-look lineup with “Lost” taking over the 10 p.m. slot.
The network finished first last night with an average 4.4 adults 18-49 rating and 12 share, according to Nielsen overnights, just ahead of No. 2 CBS’s 4.1/11.

Morning Race Heats Up in Cincy

Here's a forecast for May: Get ready for daily showers of promotions and thundering enticements to watch local morning TV news.
With the departure of meteorologist Steve Horstmeyer from WKRC-TV's top-rated "Good Morning Cincinnati" after 19 years, stations are eager to snag viewers who might be changing their TV habits.

First Thursday of Sweeps Goes to ABC

With “Grey’s Anatomy” finally back from writers’ strike hiatus, ABC easily won the first night of the May sweeps last night. Still, the best news of the night for ABC came at 10 p.m., where the network has long struggled to find a strong lead-out for “Grey’s.”
By relocating “Lost,” which aired at 9 on Thursdays while “Grey’s” was out, to 10 p.m., the network may have finally found its winning duo.

FOX Only Network Not to Suffer from Writers' Strike Syndrome

That writers' strike annoyed viewers with reruns, and trade journals are saying it was a disaster -- except for Fox.

The February ratings sweeps' numbers show all of the big broadcast networks except Fox suffered declines running from 17 percent to 41 percent, according to Media Life, an industry trade journal.

WBNS Once Again Dominates Columbus Ratings

The writers strike changed the TV landscape during the Nielsen "sweeps" in February but had little effect on local ratings.

Stations relied on sports, reality and other nonfiction programming to fill prime-time hours.

Early Sweeps Report from Louisville

To borrow an annoying phrase from TV news: The ‘Ville Voice has learned that WHAS-TV is kicking butt thus far during the ratings sweeps.
