With the beleaguered broadcast business increasingly focused on the bottom line, Dan Bradley’s promotion to general manager at WCMH Columbus July 1 may have surprised some. Columbus' NBC Affiliate President Speaks on Tiered Affiliation Agreement

In Executive Session last week, NBC affiliate relations chief John Eck outlined the bold three-level plan by which affiliates could now partner with his network.

Affiliates can opt for the bronze level, a continuation of the current relationship, simply swapping distribution for ad inventory. Or, they can step up to the silver level and become partners in NBC's local and national Internet ventures. At gold, affiliates would also turn over their retransmission consent rights to the network, which would represent them in negotiations with cable and satellite and share in the revenue.

The Truth About Teen TV Viewing According to Nielsen

Nielsen is taking on the panic in traditional media that teens are too busy "texting, Twittering or LOL-ing" to pick up a newspaper or flip on the TV.

Nielsen's June 2009 How Teens Use Media report, presented today by Nic Covey, director of insights for the Nielsen Company, at the annual What Teens Want conference at the Time & Life Building in New York, states that American teens actually watch more TV than they ever have (with a 6 percent increase during the past five years) and spend half as much time browsing the Internet than the rest of America. That's only 11 hours and 32 minutes a month!

USA Leads in Cable Ratings

With one week left before the second quarter ends, USA Network is drawing away from TNT in the primetime ratings race. According to Nielsen data, USA now enjoys a 3% lead among adults 18-49, and the latest batch of weekly ratings numbers sees the network all but sewing up the title.

USA blew out the competition in the week ended June 21, averaging 1.7 million adults 18-49, topping runner-up TNT by some 728,000 viewers. The NBC Universal cable powerhouse also put together another convincing victory among total viewers, drawing an average audience of 3.95 million in primetime while walking away with the week's biggest deliveries of adults 25-54 (1.87 million) and viewers 18-34 (745,000).

WOSU Interviews Prominent Blind/Deaf Man...For Radio

Today, I learned that WOSU has interviewed Bryan Grubb, a deaf-blind right activist and a motivational speaker from central Ohio, about deaf-blind rights. Ohio AP Inducts New Hall of Fame Class

OAPB-HALL OF FAME

Ohio AP Broadcasters induct new Hall of Fame class

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Veteran Columbus reporter Carol Luper of WSYX-TV and Willard Parr, a broadcaster still on radio in southern Ohio after more than 50 years, have been inducted into the Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

This year's class also includes TV reporter and anchor Dick Skelton, who died a little over a year ago. He retired in 2007 after 38 years with WFMJ-TV in Youngstown.

The new inductees were announced at the annual Ohio A-P Broadcasters awards luncheon in Columbus.

The Hall of Fame honors broadcast journalists who have served with exceptional distinction and honor and have worked in radio or TV news for at least 20 years at AP member stations in Ohio.

The OAPB also has honored the late morning anchor Heather Pick of WBNS-TV as the recipient of this year's Carl Day Outstanding Achievement Award for exceptional public service. Though she died last year following a battle with breast cancer, her memory continues to inspire work and contributions to fight the disease.

The Ville Voice Splits With the CW

The new owners of CW affiliate WBKI-TV, Iowa-based Fusion Communications, fired station manager and Louisville Live morning host Dan Spangler on Tuesday. Yesterday, they notified us, through Craig Hoffman, that they no longer want a ‘Ville Voice/Page One segment on the morning show.

Hoffman gave no specific reason for the change, mumbling something about the way new management always makes changes, that they’re adding some things and taking away some things, that it was nothing personal. That’s not exactly true

Cincy Works Through Tricky DTV Switch

While most markets had a fairly smooth switch to fully digital television last week, it took DMA #34 Cincinnati a little more time-and a lot more phone calls from perturbed viewers-to sort out its post-analog issues. With a high rate of over the air viewing and some topographical challenges, general managers in Cincinnati were prepared for problems, though perhaps not the degree of displacement that resulted last Friday.
WCPO VP/General Manager Bill Fee says the market's three phone banks (WCPO and WXIX shared one) logged 4,600 calls over the weekend. Compounding the issue was Newport's WKRC shifting from a UHF to VHF signal, and Scripps' WCPO's issues with its broadcast tower; the station is broadcasting in low power for the next few weeks until it moves its digital antenna-currently 100 feet below the top of the tower-in place of the analog antenna at the top.

WHIO Digital Signal to Improve

The Analog shutoff is complete, but the work on DTV continues at WHIO-TV.

When Congress delayed the digital transition in February, WHIO-TV was forced to postpone work on improving its digital signal. Now, that work is finally underway.

First, tower climbers will remove the old Analog antenna atop the WHIO-TV transmitter on Germantown Street in Dayton. Then, the station's new Digital antenna will be hoisted into place. The work is expected to take about three weeks.

WHIO-TV signed on the first digital transmitter in Dayton in October 2001 and began broadcasting all newscasts in a 16:9 widescreen format on April 1, 2007 - the first Ohio station outside of Cleveland to switch to the new format. Until now, the station's digital signal has been transmitted from the side of the Germantown tower.

Columbus' DTV Switch No Big Deal

Television's Big Switch took place yesterday, but there was more talk around local TV station newsrooms about Chastity Bono's sex change than about the switch from analog to digital television.

Broadcast channels were scheduled to complete their conversion from analog to digital signals throughout the day, and officials at central Ohio stations said that calls from viewers were light.

TV sets that receive over-the-air broadcasts via old-fashioned antennas had to be converted by yesterday in order to receive digital broadcasts, or their owners would see little but static.

Digital May Deliver for the CW

While some station execs and government wonks fret over the digital TV transition, others are starting to see opportunity.
The long-awaited -- and long-delayed -- move from analog to digital will serve as a great equalizer for TV stations that until now were second-class citizens in the over-the-air spectrum.

And that could mean wider audiences for the sources that provide programs for those stations -- including, most notably, the CW.

Cincinnati Reporter Wins German Award

Cincinnati freelance TV reporter (and City Council Candidate) Laure Quinlivan has won a national journalism award from Germany’s RIAS (Radio in the American Sector) for her television news series “Cincinnati to Germany Connections” that aired on WLWT-TV in August 2008. She’ll be attending the RIAS award ceremony Sunday, June 7 at the Ritz Carleton in Berlin, Germany.

“The very lively and entertaining reports by Laure Quinlivan on the Sister Cities Cincinnati and Munich, show how Germans and Americans in both cities get to know each other and work together “said the official awards jury. “The TV reports were supported by the very good internet blog “Cincinnati to Germany Connections.”

RIAS judges included John Dancy, former NBC news correspondent; William Skane, former CBS producer; Dr. Melinda Crane, Berlin freelance journalist and Deutsche Welle news anchor; Claus Detjen, publicist; and Deiter Schroder, former publisher of Berlines Zeitung.

Quinlivan reported and produced 6-minute stories on Cincinnati’s Fairview German Language School, the University of Cincinnati’s “Summer in Munich” program and Cincinnati & Munich Parks exchanges. The reports aired on WLWT’s late newscasts. Quinlivan researched ideas and proposed the stories as a freelance project after being accepted as a RIAS fellow last year. RIAS, in partnership with RTNDF, pays the travel expenses of American journalists selected as fellows so they can produce stories for their American TV news stations following the two-week RIAS program.

WLWT-TV News Director Brennan Donnellon was pleased with the results. “Laure found exciting angles for these long form stories and provided extra material for versions we posted online,” said Donnellan. “We’re excited judges gave the stories an international award and you can still watch them on our web site.” http://www.wlwt.com/specialreports/index.html?rss=cin&psp=news

“The RIAS experience was incredible,” says Quinlivan. “We got to meet political and civic leaders in Germany, visit NATO headquarters, the World Bank and European Union. The best part for me was experiencing the German lifestyle – they’re way ahead of us when it comes to recycling, conservation and living “green,” says Quinlivan. After noting Germans of every age ride bikes in cities and the countryside, she plans to push for more bike paths in Cincinnati. She is an endorsed Democratic candidate for Cincinnati City Council, with an election in November.

Quinlivan worked 13 years for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, where she won two Peabody Awards and 18 Emmys for investigative reporting. She is a Miami University graduate, and lives with her husband and two children in the Mt. Lookout neighborhood of Cincinnati. She entered the Cincinnati City Council race in March and looks forward to the citywide election in November. She is a member of IRE (Investigative Reporters & Editors), SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists), and NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences). She is also with the Mt. Lookout Community Council.

Two Cincinnati videographers worked with Quinlivan on “Cincinnati to Germany Connections” and share in the award honors.

WLWT’s Christopher Knight shot the Cincinnati footage and edited the series. He is a 1992 graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s E-Media program, and will be a RIAS fellow this summer. He lives with his family in the Green Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati.

Videographer Joyce Looby shot video with Quinlivan in Munich and Donaueschingen, Germany. She works for Michael Bambino Productions. She graduated from Miami University in 1979, and lives with her family in Oxford, Ohio.

Cincinnati DTV Conversion News

We already reported on WXIX-TV 19/Newport's decision to shut their analog signal off at 6am. Here's the entire day's schedule of analog shutdowns for Cincinnati (we don't know about the Dayton stations, but will find out):

12:01am: WCPO-TV 9/Cincinnati
2am: WKRC-TV 12/Cincinnati (shortly after, they will flashcut from digital channel 31 to digital 12, which is a VHF band station)
6am: WXIX (as noted above)
11:59pm: WLWT-TV 5/Cincinnati

The only problem we can see is with the WXIX shutdown occurring during their morning news programming. (And after what happened with their digital signal Tuesday night, we hope they'll be ready in the event that happens again.)

low-power Lexington TV station with such a poor signal that it often can't be viewed has been sold to a global Christian network.

The Cartoonist Makes Its World Premiere at the Wexner Center

His books have touched the lives of millions worldwide, yet he’s not a household name. He’s regarded as one of America’s greatest living cartoonists, yet you won’t see his work in the Sunday funnies. Jeff Smith is a paradox—a living example of the self-made man who followed his childhood dream—and the subject of a feature-length documentary by Mills James Productions, making its world premiere May 22, 2009 at 7 p.m. at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus.

“The Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, BONE and the Changing Face of Comics” tells the inspiring story of Jeff Smith’s creation of the epic comic book, BONE, hailed by critics as one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.

Fellow cartoonists Scott McCloud, Colleen Doran, Harvey Pekar, Paul Pope and Terry Moore, as well as friends, associates, experts and Jeff himself, share their stories of this worldwide phenomenon that began in small comics shops and is now found in bookstores, schools, libraries and the homes of millions of adults and children in 25 countries. In addition to discussing Jeff’s early years, influences and philosophies, the film provides a look at a unique industry and art form that continues to change and evolve.

“The Cartoonist” writer and director Ken Mills said if a documentary is to do its job right, it takes people into a world they don’t see everyday.

“The inside world of comics is its own hidden universe with its own culture and celebrities,” said Mills. “The Cartoonist gives people a chance to venture into that world and see what it’s like—up close. It’s a must-see for BONE fans, but more than that, it’s a re-entry into the world of comics for anyone who stopped reading them at some point. And for anyone remotely thinking about going into cartooning, this is a lesson on the intricacies of entering and surviving the comics business.”

On view during the summer of 2008 at the Wexner Center, the exhibition “Jeff Smith: BONE and Beyond” encompassed original drawings spanning the cartoonist’s works, and included selections from artists who Smith cites as direct influences. Scenes from the documentary, including fan interviews, were shot during the exhibition.

“The Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, BONE and the Changing Face of Comics” makes its world premiere at 7 p.m. on May 22 at the Wexner Center for the Arts on the campus of The Ohio State University, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio. The premiere is part of the Visiting Filmmakers series, where rising stars and acclaimed masters come to screen their films and talk with Wexner Center audiences. The event is co-sponsored by Ohio State’s Cartoon Library and Museum. Tickets are $7 for the general public.

Bateman is looking for public relations work, possibly including the vacant emergency management position in Butler County.

Meteorologist Roundabout in Dayton

WKEF and WRGT have finally filled the void in the weather department that was left with the departure of meteorologist Greg Dixon. Expect to see Booth hit the airwaves beginning next week.

BUT....

After only being at the station for roughly a year, Lindsey Kurtz of WKEF/WRGT is leaving the station to become a full time Christian missionary. Kurtz will be leaving the Miami Valley for Atlanta, where she plans to get married before heading off to Haiti.

West Virginia Station Gives Automakers - and Revenue a Boost

Now that the recession is official, and advertising revenues are taking an even bigger hit, here's an interesting question: Are broadcasters actually making the economy worse than it really is? Tim DeFazio thinks so.

How to Get a Digital Signal on a Digital TV

Strange but true: Just because you bought a new digital TV doesn't mean you're watching digital TV.

After cutting off analog May 1, CET folks were surprised to hear digital TV owners complain they couldn't get the signal. Apparently, many DTV owners didn't read their manuals and have been watching shows on the TV's analog tuner.

"It's understandable. In the past, you bought a radio or TV, brought it home, plugged it in and tuned to the station you wanted to watch," says Jack Dominic, CET vice president, COO and technology blogger.

Ohio and Kentucky Students Win 2009 Student Excellence Awards from NATAS-Ohio Valley

The 2009 Student Award of Excellence winners have been announced by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

In the Documentary category there were two winners. “Honor Flight” and “Superhighway.”

“Honor Flight” by Gahanna Lincoln High School (Ohio) students Lianne Castile and Blake Swanson. Honor Flight is a program in Columbus, OH which flies World War II veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. Castile and Swanson interviewed program directors, veterans, even former Senator Bob Dole.

Castile and Swanson (producers), as well as Gahanna Lincoln High School advisor Tom Gregory, received an Honorable Mention Craft Achievement for WGLH’ s TV Weekly News Show.

“Superhighway” by Henry County High School (Kentucky) student Michael Veenstra takes a look at the evolution of the internet over the past 20 years. From Tech Space to PCs, to the social networking subculture, Veenstra’s internet history trip focuses not only on the changes in technology, but how the users have changed as well.

The winner in the Arts and Entertainment/Cultural Affairs category is “Untraceable” by Henry County High School (Kentucky) student Kasey Beggs. A suspenseful short about a girl’s encounter with a stranger, Beggs and her team created a dark mood through the play of shadows and light, and a simple yet effective storyline. The viewer was left wondering what happened next and that’s exactly the reaction a producer wants.

“Congratulations to those who have been honored with the Student Award of Excellence,” said Anthony Mirones, president of the Ohio Valley Chapter. “Some of the most talented media students nationwide are right in our own backyard. We’re proud to have the opportunity to encourage and mentor these dynamic students.”

Student Award of Excellence winners were chosen by television industry professionals who are members of the Ohio Valley Chapter of NATAS. The high schools will receive a Student Award of Excellence pillar for permanent display.

Big Cuts in Cincinnati Sports Radio

Local radio sports talk became a lot quieter Tuesday.

As part of nationwide budget cuts, Clear Channel eliminated all but one local show on “Homer” WCKY-AM (1530), and dropped Enquirer sports columnist Paul Daugherty after two years hosting WLW-AM (700).

WCKY-AM canceled morning shows hosted by Alan Cutler, who was laid off, and Mo Egger, retained by Clear Channel.

WSYX's "Gotcha" Gets Lampooned in Other Paper

Napoleon once said that the press corps is to be feared more than a thousand bayonets.

That’s likely what WSYX 6 On Your Side Problemsolver Tom Bosco had in the back of his mind as he hit the streets of Worthington in Monday night’s strong, publicly-spirited and subtly titled investigative piece, “Gotcha.”

Cincinnati Station Censors Osbourne Show

Raycom's WXIX-TV, the Fox affiliate in Cincinnati, is known for its many questionable preemptions (which have kept even some episodes of the massively popular 'Simpsons' from being seen on WXIX at all). But this story lays bare the fact that the station's intent is to censor for content - not to make programming decisions to serve other purposes.

An Author's Blog on His Visit to WLEX

Lately I have been very blessed to have had lots of attention drawn to my latest book, Pumpkin Guts. I have had articles about it in all of the local and regional papers, including the Kentucky Mountain News. I have had my book placed in local businesses such as Jiffy Mart and in local schools where it is available for both checkout and sale. My website and blog are getting lots of hits, and my book is selling very well on Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Books-A-Million. However, it is my recent trip to WLEX Channel 18 that I want to write about today.

WBNS Dominates Columbus Ratings Period Again

Television's February "sweeps" were delayed this year until March because of the government-mandated deadline for stations to switch to digital broadcasting.

But the results -- at least locally -- were much the same as before.

As it did in November, WBNS-TV (Channel 10) led the pack with each of its newscasts -- chalking up victories in the early morning; at midday; and at 5, 6 and 11 p.m.

WLWT to Use Live Blogs to Cover Events

WLWT-TV/DT 5 has expanded the tools at their disposal to cover stories as they happen.

Now, the station's website, is offering Live Blogs to cover some of the bigger stories in the Tri-State, including the current Ryan Widmer murder trial.

Widmer is accused of murdering his wife Sarah in August 2008 in their Hamilton Township, Ohio home. (Hamilton Twp. is in Warren County, which is where Kings Island is.)

Anyway, we're guessing that this tool was one reason WLWT wanted to have computers in the courtroom during the McCafferty trial, as we covered previously here. Apparently, this judge was not so strict and has allowed the use of the computers.

We're sure several other news sites use the tool, and we know that WWE uses it for their WWE Universe fan section, to do live blog coverage of Monday Night Raw and Pay-Per-View events.

Did WHAS Jump the Gun with Gillespie Firing Story?

Are you kidding me?

The University of Kentucky has sent a statement to WHAS-TV in Louisville saying that the story of Billy Gillispie’s firing is NOT true.

Initially, the station stood by their report that the coach will not return next year.

But they’ve now pulled the story off their website (as of 11:35pm EDT).

The story originally said that sources had confirmed to two WHAS reporters that Gillispie was out.

We’ll have much, much more tomorrow morning.

Coupons Available for Digital Switch Once Again

The $40 converter-box coupons are back.

More funding for the delayed digital transition means the end of the waiting list and a second chance for those whose coupons expired.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which runs the government's TV converter-box coupon program, is using about $490 million of the $650 million it received from the stimulus bill for the coupons.

Some of that money has been spent clearing out the waiting list for coupons, said Anna Gomez, acting assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information.

Those on the waiting list should receive their coupons in the next two weeks, she said.

"We are processing all new coupons as they come in," Gomez said.

Digital Switch Could Mean a Weak Signal in Evansville

As June 12 — the date for TV stations to switch from analog to digital signals — nears and uncertainty looms about the process, the Federal Communications Commission continues to set regulations and guidelines for broadcasters.

The FCC notified television stations last week that, if they expect to lose 2 percent or more of the population in their analog viewing range after the switch, they must broadcast the news of the signal loss to their viewers before June 12.

Mills James Ranks #1 in Columbus

Mills James Productions took the top spot in Columbus C.E.O. magazine’s recently published list of Central Ohio audiovisual production companies.

In the April 2009 issue of Columbus C.E.O., Mills James is named the #1 Audiovisual Production Company based on the C.E.O Leaderboard survey, which ranks companies by number of Central Ohio employees.

This latest recognition comes just months after Columbus C.E.O. readers voted Mills James as the “Best Audiovisual Production Company” in the November 2008 issue’s “Best of Business in Central Ohio” list, which stated that Mills James “blew away the competition.”

In addition to the Columbus C.E.O. honors, Mills James has consistently been named the top-ranked company in Business First Columbus’ annual list of Greater Columbus Audiovisual Production Companies.

Columbus C.E.O. is Central Ohio's largest business magazine, with a monthly circulation of more than 26,000. The magazine delivers in-depth business reporting on the area's financial arena, with a blend of business-related articles, profiles of movers and shakers, in-depth reporting of local trends and more.

Employee-owned, Mills James has been providing creative media solutions for a wide range of advertising, broadcast and corporate clients, including many Fortune 500 corporations, since 1984.

Louisville's CW Wants to Clear the Air

Here’s a follow-up to yesterday’s story about the CW. The station’s CEO, Carol LaFever, was understandably upset when she learned a competitor was telling advertisers that her station might fold in a few weeks and was being evicted from its building.

First, it wasn’t true. And more importantly, it could be bad for business. We certainly believe that Fox41’s Bill Lamb put an immediate stop to the rumor-spreading when he found out about it, but LaFever was compelled to write a letter explaining the station’s status.

3 Columbus TV Stations to Pool Resources

Three TV stations in this Midwestern city are following the cost-cutting trend in the broadcast industry. WCMH-TV, WXYX-TV and WTTE-TV will now share news operations. WCMH is the NBC affiliate owned by Media General, and WTTE is a Fox and WSYX is the ABC owned by Sinclair.

“The stations’ assignment desks have built a back channel to communicate with each other and a workflow to schedule shoots,” WCMH said in a press release. The announcement likened the arrangement to a pool feed, which stations have done for years, but the notion of pool-feeding regular local news is relatively recent though catching on.

10TV to Honor Former Anchor Heather Pick at Race for the Cure

WBNS-10TV announced Tuesday that it is teaming up with Wolfe Associates, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Charles Penzone, Inc. to help carry on the legacy of Heather Pick, the 10TV morning and midday anchor who lost her public battle with breast cancer in November.

The collaboration will involve the creation of "Heather's Team" for Komen Columbus Race for the Cure, to be held May 16. Those who register to be part of "Heather's Team" will pay $45 and receive a T-shirt with Pick pictured on the front, a pink wig like the one she sported in her final public appearance shortly before her death. Proceeds from the sale of the shirts and wigs will go to Komen Columbus in her honor.

WBKI Up For Sale

Louisville’s CW affiliate television station is on the auction block.

Station CEO Carol LaFever says the economy isn’t necessarily the reason for the sale. Rather, the station’s licensees have decided to get out of the television business altogether.

The buyer will decide what happens to the station’s employees and CW affiliation, but LaFever says she has high hopes for WBKI’s future.

“We have allowed access to the airwaves for some minorities, diversities and nontraditional broadcasters and we’re hoping that through this process they may have a chance to look at the opportunity and possibly again have a point of entry where they might not otherwise,” she says.

Bidding for WBKI starts at $750,000 and continues through April 17th.

It might seem a long way from home shopping to ballet, but WDEM-TV (Channel 17) made the journey with the flick of a switch.

The little-known Grandview Heights station, a home-shopping outlet for more than a decade, changed its format a few weeks ago to a mix of TV classics and a fledgling arts-and-culture program called Lifeline Columbus.

The Latest on WHAS' Chuck Olmstead

It was great to get the phone call I just received here at WHAS 11. On the other end, Chuck Olmstead's wife Candy. She couldn't wait to tell you, our viewers how thankful she and her entire family are to this community. In fact, Candy said if she could embrace you all with a hug, she would. And believe me, Candy's got the energy to do it.

Wheeling Radio Station Loses Second Employee in 2 Weeks

Our condolences, again, to employees of RCK 1 Group talk WKKX/1600 in Wheeling WV, as a second member of their radio family has passed away.

West Virginia Media CBS/ABC/Fox affiliate WTRF/7 and sister newspaper The State Journal report that WKKX talk host and newsman Tod Jeffers has died at the age of 67.

Among the stations on Jeffers' resume according to AllAccess - Columbus' WBNS-FM/97.1, which recently changed from hot AC to sports as "97.1 The Fan".

WKKX is mainly a Wheeling-centric station, and doesn't cover nearly as much of the Ohio side of the Ohio Valley region as Clear Channel talk competitor WWVA/1170 (or the two local TV stations, WTRF and Cox NBC affiliate WTOV/9 Steubenville OH).

But we did note the passing of Ohio Valley broadcast legend George Kellas...who was a co-worker of Jeffers at WKKX. That means the Wheeling talk station's employees are now grieving over the second staff member death in under two weeks...

Big Cutbacks in Kent PBS and Columbus Dispatch

Digital Switch Gets Mixed Reception in Columbus

Mar. 1--Back in 1997, I wrote this about my weariness with the hype surrounding the far-distant switch to digital television:

"Someone alert me on the day . . . when I can no longer get a picture on my existing television. At that point, I will pay attention."

Well, I was true to my word.
