And apparently, so do the promo-meisters at WKYT, the CBS affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky. They aired a brilliant spot right before and after Sunday's Super Bowl that used the classic CBS quiz show to tout the station's mega doppler radar.

Why Andrews is Out at 11 on WKRC

So why did WKRC-TV remove Kit Andrews from Channel 12's 11 p.m. news last week after 19 years?

The official word from Local 12 was that she "expressed an interest in ... a lifestyle change."

But Channel 12 also was looking for a ratings boost by promoting Cammy Dierking to main co-anchor with Rob Braun.

Clyde Gray and Carol Williams on WCPO-TV (Channel 9) have been closing the gap at 11 p.m.

WDTN Lays off 4

The economy has led to WDTN-TV Channel 2 laying off four of its employees, officials at the station confirmed Friday.

Four employees at the station were let go Thursday, a station official said. The workforce reductions were made because of the economy, and the station would not say who specifically was let go.

Dayton Broadcasting Legend Returns to Local TV

Carl Day, a veteran Dayton television anchor, has come out of retirement and has returned to television just in time for his 72nd birthday.

Day will be doing special commentary pieces on WRGT-TV,Channel 45 and WKET-TV, Channel 22 newscasts twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

More Details About New Jerry Springer-Bill Cunningham Show

The Chicago Tribune took notice of my Dec. 27 column item about Jerry Springer and Bill Cunningham taping a point-counterpoint TV pilot…. for the Tribune TV stations run by Randy Michaels (but not WGN America). The pilot was taped Dec. 16 at WXIX-TV, because Pat Barry — a longtime friend and former coworker of Springer (at Ch 5 news), Cunningham and Michaels (from Clear Channel/Jacor) — is producing the show. It’s modeled after ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” where Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon argue over topics.

Former WHAS/WTVQ Engineer Dies

Terry Wright, the Chief Engineer at WLTX, passed away as the result of a massive heart attack Wednesday night. He was 61.

During his career, Terry held many technical positions including Assistant Chief Engineer at WHAS-TV in Louisville, KY, Chief Engineer at WKPC-TV in Louisville, Chief Engineer at WTVQ-TV in Lexington, KY, Regional Chief Engineer for WEPX/WPXU in Greenville, NC, and Chief Engineer for WCIV-TV in Charleston, SC.

WLKY Wins Media Eclipse Award

The Sports Network
Louisville, KY television station WLKY has won the the Media Eclipse Award for Local Television for its feature on owner-trainer Tom McCarthy. WLKY previously won the award in 2006.

Produced by John Boel and Scott Eckhardt, the program was about the 75-year- old McCarthy who served as trainer, groom and assistant for his one horse stable. The lone horse in his stable was General Quarters who won the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Can Someone Help Out WSTR's Sr. Promotions Producer?

My blog earlier today about NBC Universal renewing the “Jerry Springer” talk show (with some great old photos of Jerry from the 1970s and ’80s) prompted an email from Gary Anaple at WSTR-TV, which carries Springer. He says that Jerry told him recently that he made his TV debut on Channel 64 – then a scrambled, subscription-only service called “On TV” on WBTI-TV, before cable had much penetration here — back in 1981, to introduce a pay-TV Rolling Stones concert. He asks if anyone out there has a videotape of Springer’s appearance. If you’ve got it, or just remember it, let us know.

Graphics Woes for WCPO

So who were those people sports anchor Dennis Janson said goodbye to at the end of Friday’s sportscast? They were three veterans of Channel 9’s art department – Jim Steeves (18 years), Mel MacArthur (15 years) and John LaRoche (13 years) — who worked their last day on Friday. They lost their jobs as part of a companywide consolidation of the 10 Scripps TV station art department duties shifted to the Tampa station.

I’m told that the Ch 9 graphics are now being built by news producers in the newsroom using a template system. This started Oct. 23. All 10 Scripps stations will soon have the same graphics package. I’m told the new “desert brown” graphics originated at the Scripps station in Phoenix. Or is it a “rust” color for Scripps’ stations in Detroit, Cleveland or Cincinnati? Says one Ch 9 insider: “We went from the best (graphics on TV in town) to the worst pretty much overnight.”

New Cinci ND Arrives to Shut Revolving Door

"Every decision we're making is to see what is the best long-term play for us. No changes for the sake of change," says Owen, who arrived from KXTV-TV in Sacramento, Calif., four weeks ago.

WSTR Gets New Antenna

WSTR-TV 64/Cincinnati, which rebranded last week with the old/new moniker of "Star 64", just upped their power to 60 kW, and installed a new antenna custom built for the terrain of the Tri-State.


John Kiesewetter reported Monday that the new antenna is about 72 feet taller, at 902 feet vs. 830 feet. However, the antenna is still located on what's known in local media geek circles as "STAR Tower", aka WSTR's broadcast tower in College Hill on Winton Road. It was custom built for WSTR, so that it can cover the hilly terrain of the area, says John Lawhead, WSTR General Manager.

WBKI Picks Up Lottery Drawings

Nightly Kentucky Lottery drawings in the Louisville area are moving to WBKI, the CW Louisville station — Insight Cable Channel 7 — effective Thursday night.

The drawings have been on WDRB-Fox 41 for the last 10 years. But WDRB did not sign on again with M & S Works, the company that the Kentucky Lottery Corp. has picked for the third consecutive, five-year period to produce the drawings show, said lottery spokesman Chip Polston. The Fox affiliate “didn’t want to participate any more,” he said.

When Will Jack Atherton Debut on Channel 5

It could be any day now… Atherton, the former Fox 19 anchor, finally can work for WLWT-TV (Ch 5) starting Thursday, Oct. 1, when his 9-month “non-compete” clause expires. Over lunch this week, Atherton told me he’s volunteered “to show up on the morning show just to say hello!”

Atherton reports to the Channel 5 newsroom on Thursday. He’s scheduled to anchor his first newscasts with Sheree Paolello on Monday. But News Director Stacy Owen confirms that “News 5 Today” might feature a visit soon by the station’s newest personality.

Former WBNS Asst. Newsman Out as ND at WPXI

WPXI general manager Ray Carter said he and news director Corrie Harding have come to a mutual decision that Harding will leave his role at Channel 11 effective immediately.

Harding joined WPXI in 2005 after working as an assistant news director and managing editor at WBNS in Columbus.
