WSYX's Kent Justice Gone

Back in halcyon days at Channel 6, employees used to spend their working hours griping and grumbling about news director Lyn Tolan.

Tolan, who earned a reputation as a bit of slave driver before her retirement earlier this year, even had her own nickname: “Ayatolyn.” But employees at WSYX are in no mood to come up with clever word-plays these days. The station’s recently hired news director, Mitch Jacob, may be stifling the creative environment a bit.

Jacob, a Toledo native, started in “June.” And he lives in “Grandview.” Things at the station are “good.” Those one-word answers are about as chatty as Jacob was willing to get this week, not exactly batting away his fast reputation for being distant and unreadable. But it’s not his personality that bugs news staffers as much as Jacob’s ability to lower the ax with no warning.

One of our great speakers at our Silver Circle Professional Development Seminar, Mayra Ruiz McPherson, wrote a great article on one of our newest NATAS - Ohio Valley members, Cole Imperi.

Stealth Marketing Gone Wild in the Ohio Valley?

One of my favorite critiques of our ad-saturated modern world is in "Infinite Jest," the epic novel by recently-departed author and essayist David Foster Wallace. In the novel's not-too-distant future, time itself has become a corporate marketing opportunity. There's the Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar and the Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment. That's not to mention the Year of the Yushityu 2007 Mimetic-Resolution-Cartridge-View-Motherboard-Easy-To-Install-Upgrade For Infernatron/InterLace TP Systems For Home, Office, Or Mobile, which is often abbreviated.

New WHAS-TV Strategy on Streaming

After we pointed out the copyright violation earlier this week, when WHAS-TV was streaming its entire programming schedule online, the station has wisely come up with a new strategy.

Monitoring Social Media - Unravel the Web Chatter

People are talking about your brand online, but what are they saying and how do you find them, asks Robert Gray.

According to a report released by E-consultancy this month, the UK market for online reputation and buzz monitoring will grow by around 30 per cent in 2008, to an estimated value of pounds 60m. That this bullish outlook comes at a time of broader economic uncertainty illustrates the growing importance that brands and organisations are attaching to blogs, forums and other social media.

Over the past couple of years a new wave of online reputation monitoring tools have been established in response to increasing media fragmentation, changing consumer behaviour and the increasing breadth of different consumer channels. E-consultancy's Online Reputation and Buzz Monitoring Buyer's Guide 2008 concludes that it is no longer feasible just to monitor online reputation manually. Moreover, as technology improves, organisations are getting more value from their monitoring services.

Bad Blood Brewing Between Microsoft and Yahoo!

Yahoo has rejected another offer from Microsoft to buy its online search operations as ludicrous.

Yahoo said it received the offer Friday and was given less than 24 hours to respond. The company said the "take or leave it" proposal would have dismantled its Internet franchise.

The Chimes are Back on NBC

The chimes are back at NBC. Ben Silverman’s fondness for the network’s glory days is popping up again in the form of a new “Chime In” campaign that will now be tagged to all on-air promotions. The G-E-C notes that have been a signature of the Peacock network since it was only a radio signal are returning to the broadcast network after years on ice in the General Electric profile.

TV Ties Boost Online Content

Online content tied to television viewing is rising in value as a means to reach potential buyers of new vehicles, according to a J.D. Power and Associates study released today. Fully 68 percent of verified new-vehicle buyers went online to find information on television shows, the Power Auto Online Media Study found, an increase of 22 percent since the 2007 study. That places TV show content as third-most relevant to new-car buyers, behind only travel-related information and news.

Huffington Post Goes Local

Pundit/Web publisher Arianna Huffington is delving into local news with her Huffington Post brand, she told a gathering at the Future of Journalism event hosted by the Guardian media company. Huffington will start with a Chicago Web site that aggregates news, sports, business and other reportage from other media sources, along with the best of Chicago’s blogs. A lone editor will “curate” the site.
Huffington, founder of the “Internet newspaper” HuffingtonPost.com, sees the venture as the first of many local sites located in “dozens of U.S. cities.” Her local media plans were previously reported in the England-based Guardian.

Possible White House Media Manipulation Studied

With echoes of the Watergate hearings, the House Judiciary Committee Friday opened hearings on whether the White House obstructed justice by impeding the investigation into the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame and manipulated the media in making the case for going to war with Iraq.
Referring to former press secretary Scott McClellan, whose allegations about such malfeasance in his book What Happened prompted the hearings, Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) began by saying that when "credible and troubling allegations are made by a former administration official, we can deal with fact and not personal and partisan attacks."

The Art of Brand Integration

Seamless, organic brand integration remains an elusive pursuit. But a panel discussion Wednesday at Promax/BDA North America 2008 here produced a simple by-law for advertisers and content creators looking to successfully marry advertising and programming: start early.
Titled “Building Business Through Brand Integration,” the panel brought together executives from the network, advertising and talent sides of the business: Dana Locatell, executive producer, @radical.media; Seth Matlins, brand agent, CAA Marketing; Doug Scott, senior partner, executive director of branded content, Ogilvy; and Dario Spina, senior vice president of integrated marketing, MTV Networks Entertainment Group.
