WDTN's Howard One of Layoff Casualties

Sharon Howard, the executive director of community and public relations at WDTN-TV, is among four people who have lost their jobs in a work force reduction at the station, Dayton’s NBC network affiliate.

WDTN Lays off 4

The economy has led to WDTN-TV Channel 2 laying off four of its employees, officials at the station confirmed Friday.

Four employees at the station were let go Thursday, a station official said. The workforce reductions were made because of the economy, and the station would not say who specifically was let go.

Dayton Broadcasting Legend Returns to Local TV

Carl Day, a veteran Dayton television anchor, has come out of retirement and has returned to television just in time for his 72nd birthday.

Day will be doing special commentary pieces on WRGT-TV,Channel 45 and WKET-TV, Channel 22 newscasts twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

WHIO and Cox Radio Going Under 1 Roof

Cox Media Group will unite WHIO-TV as well as local Cox radio stations — WHIO (simulcast on AM and FM), WHKO and WZLR — under one roof at the Cox Ohio Publishing Media Center, the company said Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The goal is to build new television and radio studios and offices at the 1611 S. Main St. center by late 2010 or early 2011, said Alex Taylor, Cox Media Group group vice president . The company will start working with contractors, probably in the first quarter of 2010, he said.

WHIO Announces Dayton Flyers Schedule

WHIO-TV has tentatively announced it's schedule of Dayton Flyers basketball games for the coming season.

The University of Dayton and channel 7 have been broadcast partners for the past 36 years.

It's an 11 game schedule starting with the season opener at home against Creighton on Saturday, November 14 at 1pm, and ending with the regular season finale at home against Saint Louis on Saturday, March 6 at 7pm.

Wife of Honored WDTN Anchor Carl Day Has Died

Donna Day, the wife of Carl Day, the well-known retired Dayton television anchorman, died early Thursday morning, Sept. 24.
According to Day his wife was pronounced dead at Southview Hospital shortly after 4 a.m. where she was rushed by paramedics after he found her unconscious in a chair in the family room of their Centerville home.

Hall of Fame Honors WHIO Videographer

Saturday afternoon the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame inducted a long-time WHIO-TV videographer.
The Hall of Fame honored videographer Denny Cheatham who retired from WHIO in April 2009.
Cheatham joined Channel 7 as a studio technician in 1963 and soon became one of WHIO’s top videographers.
Cheatham’s career spanned 46 years.
Saturdays other inductees included Gene “By Golly” Barry, Arlen “Bucky” Bockhorn, WDTN’s Marsha Bonhart, A.J. Brown, Dr. John “Turk” Logan, Deborah Parenti, WHIO Radio’s Toula Stamm and Teresa Weaver. Idotha “Bootsie” Neal was honored with the 2009 Community Service Award.
The Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame aims to recognize talented broadcasters in the Dayton area for their many years of service in the industry and their dedication to the community.

WHIO-TV was awarded 3 regional Emmy awards and 7 awards from the Society of Professional Journalists of Ohio. The awards include an Emmy for News Center 7 anchor James Brown and a 1st Place SPJ Award for Best Website in Ohio.

WHIO Anchor Jim Baldridge Looks Back at His Career

Before he started working at WHIO-TV Channel 7 in 1972, Jim Baldridge already had several years of experience.
His career in communications started as a senior at Lima Shawnee High School when he worked as an announcer at a radio station. He missed his high school graduation ceremony because he was needed at the station. Later, he served as an announcer and reporter for the Armed Forces Radio and Television services while in the U.S. Army.

WDTN Director of PR Inducted into Hall of Fame

Sharon Howard, executive director of community and public relations for WDTN-TV, was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
She was one of 12 women to receive the honor during a ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse.
Howard has been honored for her work in the community, including the James E. Stamps Communication Award from the Dayton Inter-Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund, and the Dayton YMCA Women of Influence Award.

Time Warner to Drop and Move Channels

Time Warner's 640,000 cable TV customers from Cincinnati to Dayton will see radically different lineups starting Tuesday.
On the digital service level, channels will be clustered by themes - sports, family, news, entertainment, shopping, free on demand, HDTV and local digital programming - on channels 100 through 1700.
Basic and digital subscribers to Time Warner - the area's largest cable operator - also lose eight of 22 public TV channels, despite appeals by area public broadcasters since the changes were announced a month ago.

WOSU Programming Off Time Warner Cable Southwest Area

Local fans of the Columbus-based WOSU PBS channel won't be able to view it on Time Warner Cable after Aug. 25, according to Michael Pedelty, vice president of communications for Time Warner's southwest Ohio region."We currently have it available through Dayton operations but we are making changes with some of our public broadcast stations to eliminate duplication of programming," he said Friday. "This was part of a national agreement and streamlining of services."

Cox Media to Share Resources Among TV, Radio, and Newspaper

Cox Media Group Inc.’s new business operations model involves bringing together newspaper, radio and television properties and expertise while protecting independent news and editorial functions.
But it’s all about serving customers better, said Alex Taylor, newly appointed group vice president for Cox Media Group’s Dayton and Louisville, Ky., markets.
“Our No. 1 goal is to make sure the products improve,” Taylor said.
