WBNS Kicks Off Year Long Project During Superbowl

Columbus' television news operations typically focus on what has happened in central Ohio in the preceding hours, minutes and, in some cases, seconds.

WBNS-TV (Channel 10) says it's going to look forward, too -- way forward.

The station, which is owned by The Dispatch's parent company, has announced that it will explore the region's future in a yearlong multimedia initiative dubbed Central Ohio 2015, A Community Visioning Project.

CBS Mobile Launches IPhone App for Affiliates

CBS Mobile has rolled out a standalone iPhone news app for 13 local markets. The free application for iPhones and iPod Touch delivers local news, slide shows, on-demand video and Twitter updates from anchors.

“The CBS Television Stations applications are a logical extension of our CBS News app; they give us the chance to engage users at a grassroots level and expose them to the news that matters to them the most,” said Rob Gelick, senior vice president and general manager of CBS Mobile. The division partnered with Treemo Labs to create the application and Transpera to power pre-roll video and ad capabilities.

Columbus Media Joins Hope for Haiti Event

The American Red Cross of Greater Columbus, the City of Columbus and local media representatives will host a day-long fundraiser to benefit Haiti on Thursday, Jan. 21 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Ohio Historical Society parking lot off I-71.

Attendees will be able to drive up and donate at the Columbus Hope for Haiti event. Local television, radio, and Print personalities, along with government officials and the American Red Cross, will be on hand to accept cash and check donations all day at the fundraiser.

Snell today announced that the Dispatch Broadcast Group's CBS affiliate, WBNS-TV, has rolled out central Ohio's first HD newscast thanks to the company's Kahuna multiformat SD/HD production switcher. In addition, the Dispatch Broadcast Group has deployed a second Kahuna to power the recent HD upgrade for its 10TV Productions division and the Ohio News Network (ONN), a 24-hour news channel co-located at the WBNS studios in Columbus. By seamlessly incorporating SD sources into HD transmissions, the two Kahuna systems have given Dispatch a smooth and cost-effective path to native HD broadcasting.

WBNS General Manager - Top Buckeye

When you run a station in a market full of Buckeyes, it helps to be one yourself. While WBNS Columbus has long been a ratings giant in the No. 34 DMA (see Market Eye: Bucking the Trend), President/General Manager Tom Griesdorn—Ohio State Class of 1972—extended the gap between the CBS affiliate and its competition in 2009. WBNS launched a weather channel on its digital tier over the summer, debuted a WBNS iPhone app earlier this month, and grabbed every local news race in November by a comfortable margin, doubling the nearest competitor in late news.

Former WBNS Asst. Newsman Out as ND at WPXI

WPXI general manager Ray Carter said he and news director Corrie Harding have come to a mutual decision that Harding will leave his role at Channel 11 effective immediately.

Harding joined WPXI in 2005 after working as an assistant news director and managing editor at WBNS in Columbus.

Hall of Fame Honors WHIO Videographer

Saturday afternoon the Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame inducted a long-time WHIO-TV videographer.
The Hall of Fame honored videographer Denny Cheatham who retired from WHIO in April 2009.
Cheatham joined Channel 7 as a studio technician in 1963 and soon became one of WHIO’s top videographers.
Cheatham’s career spanned 46 years.
Saturdays other inductees included Gene “By Golly” Barry, Arlen “Bucky” Bockhorn, WDTN’s Marsha Bonhart, A.J. Brown, Dr. John “Turk” Logan, Deborah Parenti, WHIO Radio’s Toula Stamm and Teresa Weaver. Idotha “Bootsie” Neal was honored with the 2009 Community Service Award.
The Dayton Area Broadcasters Hall of Fame aims to recognize talented broadcasters in the Dayton area for their many years of service in the industry and their dedication to the community.

WKYT Spends 1 Million on a New Radar

CBS affiliate WKYT (Channel 27) will announce today that it has bought a new weather radar system that it boasts is "simply the most important, life-saving advancement in weather technology and forecasting ever in Kentucky."
The First Alert Defender dual-polarity radar, which will begin operating in September, was an investment of more than $1 million, partially financed with a sponsorship by Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, that is part of a new class of weather radars that provide more information to meteorologists.

ESPN Tests New 3D Technology for Ohio State vs. USC

ESPN will flex its 3D production muscle with its coverage of the powerhouse USC vs. Ohio State college football matchup Sept. 12. It will be the first 3D test being vetted before a general viewing audience in two years of testing the technology, which has become a growing piece of the theatrical film market.The game will be in HD and standard def for home viewers, but will be delivered in 3D at The Galen Center on the USC campus and at a handful of theaters--Columbus, Ohio; Hartford, Conn.; and Hurst, Tex.ESPN won't collect a gate for the venue showings, but will instead give fans a chance to win tickets via radio station promotions, including ESPN stations in L.A. and Dallas and WBNS Columbus.ESPN says the production test will include the first true stereoscopic 3D graphics in a telecast, and will be kicking the tires "various transport mechanisms," including cinema projection and "consumersized-sized" LCD monitors, just not any consumers' homes this time around.ESPN said the 3D production will have its own trucks, crews and commentators. Mark Jones and Bob Davie will call the 3D game, while Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit will handle the 2D duties.

Former WBNS Traffic Reporter Fired from Police Job

Residents of this Licking County village don't know whether they will continue to have a police force after the chief of nine years was fired.

Mike Kilburn, 54, who had served as Alexandria's police chief since March 2000, was terminated after a five-hour administrative hearing Tuesday. Village Council members retreated into executive session for about 15 minutes at the end of the hearing before coming back to vote 4-1 to fire Kilburn. Councilwoman Naomi Compton abstained.

WBNS-10TV and ONN took home 23 of the 40 awards given to large market television stations at this year's Ohio Associated Press annual luncheon held Sunday in Columbus.

10TV and ONN combined to sweep all three "Outstanding Operations" awards this year, placing first or second, respectively, in all.

Central Ohio's News Leader again led all stations/operations in the market, with 15 awards for journalistic excellence.
