When you run a station in a market full of Buckeyes, it helps to be one yourself. The Dispatch Broadcasting station has long been a ratings giant in Columbus, but it has extended its lead over the rest of the pack. Thanks to private ownership based in Columbus and a well-established anchor crew, WBNS had a memorable November book. “We've won every news race before,” says President/General Manager Tom Griesdorn, “but not by this margin.”

WLWT Re-Signs Rico

We got word of this very early this morning from our source close to WLWT-TV 5/Cincinnati.

That source sent word to us this morning that the station has re-signed meteorologist Randi Rico to a three year deal to do mornings for the still struggling NBC affiliate.

WHIO and Cox Radio Going Under 1 Roof

Cox Media Group will unite WHIO-TV as well as local Cox radio stations — WHIO (simulcast on AM and FM), WHKO and WZLR — under one roof at the Cox Ohio Publishing Media Center, the company said Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The goal is to build new television and radio studios and offices at the 1611 S. Main St. center by late 2010 or early 2011, said Alex Taylor, Cox Media Group group vice president . The company will start working with contractors, probably in the first quarter of 2010, he said.

WCPO and WXIX Announce Local News Share Agreement

Copying what is being done in other cities, Scripps’ WCPO-TV (Ch 9) and WXIX-TV (Ch 19) announced a “local news sharing agreement.” Basically, it means that they’ll work together and only send one camera crew instead of two to some press conferences, trials, meetings or possibly even high school football or basketball games. They established the partnership after looking at similar arrangements by Scripps stations in Cleveland, Detroit, Phoenix and Tampa, plus by other stations in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Dallas and Chicago.

The joint announcement says: Under the terms of the agreement, the two stations will share coverage of certain scheduled events permitting both news organizations to more efficiently use their newsgathering resources. Once launched, the stations will identify specific events and rotate the responsibility for covering those events. The stations can always choose to staff events with crews if the station feels the pool coverage will not be adequate for its needs. The agreement will be primarily used to cover routine court hearings, news conferences and public meetings.
“This will allow both stations to better utilize our talented journalists,” says FOX19 News Director Steven Ackermann in the press release. “Each day, we find ourselves with multiple journalists sitting in a courtroom or attending a news conference that could be recorded by one station and shared with the other.”

WHAS Crusade for Children Raises 42K

A special telethon for the WHAS Crusade for Children had raised $42,146 as of early Tuesday, Crusade president and chief executive officer Dawn Lee said.

“We felt it (the telethon) went really well, especially for the first one” specifically for the Crusade’s endowment fund, Lee said.

She said more pledges are expected before the books are closed on the telethon.

Can Someone Help Out WSTR's Sr. Promotions Producer?

My blog earlier today about NBC Universal renewing the “Jerry Springer” talk show (with some great old photos of Jerry from the 1970s and ’80s) prompted an email from Gary Anaple at WSTR-TV, which carries Springer. He says that Jerry told him recently that he made his TV debut on Channel 64 – then a scrambled, subscription-only service called “On TV” on WBTI-TV, before cable had much penetration here — back in 1981, to introduce a pay-TV Rolling Stones concert. He asks if anyone out there has a videotape of Springer’s appearance. If you’ve got it, or just remember it, let us know.

Former WCPO Reporter Wins City Council Seat

Mark Mallory defeated Republican challenger Brad Wenstrup – but it wasn’t a landslide.

Mallory garnered 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Wenstrup, a podiatrist and Iraq War veteran who has never held elective office. He will serve another four years a mayor.

Rachel Ray, Nick Lachey Coming To Wilmington

Emmy-winner Rachel Ray brings her daytime talk show – and Nick Lachey – to Wilmington the weekend of Nov. 6-8 to improve a soup kitchen and host an early Thanksgiving dinner. She plans to provide “a Ray of hope” to Wilmington residents who lost their jobs with the closing of DHL and ABX Air by renovating and restocking a food pantry and soup kitchen on Saturday Nov. 7.

Then on Sunday, she’ll throw “a Thanksgiving feast filled with surprises” at the Roberts Convention Centre, says her publicist, Lauren Nowell. The weekend activities will be condensed into a one-hour show broadcast Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving and the final day of the November ratings’ “sweeps,” Nowell says.

“Rachel Ray” airs at 2 p.m. weekdays on Channel 5, and at noon on Dayton’s Channel 22.

Comedian Jay Leno performed two free concerts for unemployed Clinton County residents at the Roberts Convention Centre on May 10.

Graphics Woes for WCPO

So who were those people sports anchor Dennis Janson said goodbye to at the end of Friday’s sportscast? They were three veterans of Channel 9’s art department – Jim Steeves (18 years), Mel MacArthur (15 years) and John LaRoche (13 years) — who worked their last day on Friday. They lost their jobs as part of a companywide consolidation of the 10 Scripps TV station art department duties shifted to the Tampa station.

I’m told that the Ch 9 graphics are now being built by news producers in the newsroom using a template system. This started Oct. 23. All 10 Scripps stations will soon have the same graphics package. I’m told the new “desert brown” graphics originated at the Scripps station in Phoenix. Or is it a “rust” color for Scripps’ stations in Detroit, Cleveland or Cincinnati? Says one Ch 9 insider: “We went from the best (graphics on TV in town) to the worst pretty much overnight.”

WDRB's Dick Irby Retires

Television reporter Dick Irby has retired from Louisville’s FOX-41. Friday was the last day for the investigative journalist who became a popular fixture on local television for more than 26 years. Irby announced that he is moving to Arkansas, to be near some of his family.

Jennifer Palumbo Returns to WDKY

A familiar face returns this week to the Fox-56 10 o'clock News.

Jennifer Palumbo will once again co-anchor the news with Marvin Bartlett, returning to the position she held from 1997 to 2002.

Since 2007, Palumbo has been on the Fox-56 Morning Edition at 7 a.m. She was lured back by WDKY for the show after leaving television in 2005 to spend more time with her family.
