WLEX's Perino Named Sportscaster of the Year

Alexandria native Mary Jo Perino could not believe the latest bit of recognition she received for her work as a sportscaster at WLEX-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.

Perino, the daughter of John and Sandy Perino of Alexandria, was recently named the sportscaster of the year for the state of Kentucky by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Come Monday, Cincinnati’s CET will unveil what the Public Broadcasting System says is the first public television station to devote one of its new digital channels to 24/7 arts programming.
The immediate impact of CETarts — digital channel 48.3; Time Warner Cable Cincinnati channel 987 — will be to offer expanded broadcast of PBS shows CET already features on its primary channel. WLWT Settles "Sexting" Lawsuit

Joanna Argus was shocked when she heard her name was shown on a television news show's graphics accompanying a story about "sexting."

That's because Argus, 30, complained several times to WLWT-TV, Channel 5, about the graphic it was using on the air and its Web site and was told each time it would be removed.

The story was about sexting - sending sexually explicit photos or text messages - but had nothing to do with Argus.

KET Says Experience Counts in New Director

In choosing its new executive director, the leaders of Kentucky Educational Television decided against a national search and promoted an internal executive who dropped out of college before joining the network for a nearly 25-year career.

It's an educational background that might seem surprising, but it is not unprecedented, national observers say, and also comes at a time when many state networks are promoting staffers to save the costs and time-consuming nature of searches.

Julie Tam Leaving Fox 41

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE… I’m

I’ve traveled to cover news and on my own time for pleasure. It’s a
beautiful and convenient place to live. I love our house and our
exquisite neighborhood. Now it’s time to move on.

Springer vs. Cunningham - Were You Surprised?

Score Round One for Jerry Springer. That’s my take on the “Jerry & Bill Show,” the pilot for a weekly debate show starring Springer and 700 WLW-AM’s Bill Cunningham that aired Sunday night on WXIX-TV (Ch 19).

I’m still stunned from hearing conservative Cunningham declare that there “aren’t any dirt poor” people in the the United States. And that all the poor people in this country are overweight. He said: “We have fat poor people.”

More Weather Shakeups in Cincinnati

Valerie Abati will move to weekends, and Eric Green move to Albuquerque, after Kevin Robinson arrives today at WLWT-TV from the Weather Channel. Robinson, 30, a 1997 Princeton High School graduate, replaces chief meteorologist Derek Beasley, who quit in August to become chief forecaster for a Mobile station. Robinson will debut here on the 5, 6 & 11 p.m. newscasts by the end of the week, once he’s comfortable with the technology, says GM Richard Dyer.

We just received late breaking word that Eric Green is leaving WLWT-TV 5 and heading west.

Green becomes the new morning meteorologist for KOAT-TV 7 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A source which asked not to be identified tells us his last day will be January 13th (as in, Wednesday). We're not sure when Green will be allowed to work for KOAT.

Ah, but KOAT is a Hearst station...just like WLWT. So there may not be a non-compete involved here, with Green moving within the Hearst group.

Leno at 10 Ends on the 11th

NBCU Television Entertainment Chairman Jeff Gaspin tells TV critics in Los Angeles that the low-rated primetime hour will end the night before NBC's telecast of the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. Primetime Leno "did not meet affiliates' needs," he says. Replacing Leno after the Olympics will be a mix of original shows, repeats, extended Dateline and shows pulled from cable nets Bravo and USA, he says.

Why Andrews is Out at 11 on WKRC

So why did WKRC-TV remove Kit Andrews from Channel 12's 11 p.m. news last week after 19 years?

The official word from Local 12 was that she "expressed an interest in ... a lifestyle change."

But Channel 12 also was looking for a ratings boost by promoting Cammy Dierking to main co-anchor with Rob Braun.

Clyde Gray and Carol Williams on WCPO-TV (Channel 9) have been closing the gap at 11 p.m.

More Details About New Jerry Springer-Bill Cunningham Show

The Chicago Tribune took notice of my Dec. 27 column item about Jerry Springer and Bill Cunningham taping a point-counterpoint TV pilot…. for the Tribune TV stations run by Randy Michaels (but not WGN America). The pilot was taped Dec. 16 at WXIX-TV, because Pat Barry — a longtime friend and former coworker of Springer (at Ch 5 news), Cunningham and Michaels (from Clear Channel/Jacor) — is producing the show. Leno Doesn't Hurt WLEX

In the months before Nielsen measured Lexington's television viewership in November, much discussion was had about Jay Leno.

Nationally, the comedian's weeknight prime-time talk show has been disastrous for many affiliates' late-night newscasts. In markets where viewership is measured more frequently — Nielsen measures Lexington just four times annually — the newscasts following Leno's show hemorrhaged viewers.

Will Free TV be A Thing of the Past

Fierce negotiations between Time Warner Cable and Fox owner News Corp., along with the recent purchase of NBC Universal by Comcast Corp., are underscoring changes in television. And the notion of free, over-the-air broadcasting might be unraveling.

That could mean higher cable- or satellite-TV bills.

Although the story is current, its roots go back more than 60 years, when TV stations began airing news, sports and entertainment free and made their money by showing commercials.

All went well for decades, until cable TV and the Web began fracturing the audience for free TV and siphoning away its ad dollars. The current recession has squeezed advertising further, forcing broadcasters to accelerate their push for new revenue to pay for programming.

And pay they must, because "Good programming is expensive," said Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp. owns Fox, at a shareholders meeting in the fall. "It can no longer be supported solely by advertising revenues."

John Kieswetter: TV Trends This Decade

Not only did what we watch on TV change in the past decade, but there was a revolution in how we watched, too.

And given all the changes, it will be fun to see what our video habits will be like 10 years from now.

The Big (and Small) Picture: In the past decade, we’ve bought flat plasma TV screens bigger than a picture window, and smaller than the face of a wristwatch. (Remember wrist watches?) While many people were amazed at the movie-quality clarity of high-definition TV, others preferred the convenience of watching TV on their iPod, cell phone or laptop.

Cincinnati's 6 Figure Weather Radar Still Broken

The forecast for WKRC-TV's Precision Doppler 12 Radar?

Dark and cloudy.

For the entire year, Channel 12 chief meteorologist Tim Hedrick and his heavily promoted "Weather Authority" team has not used the $750,000 Doppler 12 radar unit in Cold Spring.

WBNS General Manager - Top Buckeye

When you run a station in a market full of Buckeyes, it helps to be one yourself. While WBNS Columbus has long been a ratings giant in the No. 34 DMA (see Market Eye: Bucking the Trend), President/General Manager Tom Griesdorn—Ohio State Class of 1972—extended the gap between the CBS affiliate and its competition in 2009. WBNS launched a weather channel on its digital tier over the summer, debuted a WBNS iPhone app earlier this month, and grabbed every local news race in November by a comfortable margin, doubling the nearest competitor in late news.

Columbus Stations Weather Recession Well

Business is gaining momentum in Columbus, home of The Ohio State University, and WBNS is, too. The Dispatch Broadcasting station has long been a ratings giant in Columbus, but it has extended its lead over the rest of the pack. Thanks to private ownership based in Columbus and a well-established anchor crew, WBNS had a memorable November book. “We've won every news race before,” says President/General Manager Tom Griesdorn, “but not by this margin.”

Evansville Ratings - Leno Effect at Play?

Well, folks, the numbers are in, and as I suspected, there's good news and bad news for just about everyone at the local news stations.

Get the full details after the jump ... the graphic is just part of the story!

When I wrote recently that I wasn't sure if WFIE's 14NEWS at 10 would overcome the inertia of Jay Leno's almost complete failure at 9:00, I told you that I thought NEWS25 had the opportunity to take the time slot.

WHIO and Cox Radio Going Under 1 Roof

Cox Media Group will unite WHIO-TV as well as local Cox radio stations — WHIO (simulcast on AM and FM), WHKO and WZLR — under one roof at the Cox Ohio Publishing Media Center, the company said Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The goal is to build new television and radio studios and offices at the 1611 S. Main St. center by late 2010 or early 2011, said Alex Taylor, Cox Media Group group vice president . The company will start working with contractors, probably in the first quarter of 2010, he said.

WCPO and WXIX Announce Local News Share Agreement

From: John Kieswetter

Copying what is being done in other cities, Scripps’ WCPO-TV (Ch 9) and WXIX-TV (Ch 19) announced a “local news sharing agreement.” Basically, it means that they’ll work together and only send one camera crew instead of two to some press conferences, trials, meetings or possibly even high school football or basketball games. They established the partnership after looking at similar arrangements by Scripps stations in Cleveland, Detroit, Phoenix and Tampa, plus by other stations in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Dallas and Chicago.

The joint announcement says: Under the terms of the agreement, the two stations will share coverage of certain scheduled events permitting both news organizations to more efficiently use their newsgathering resources. Once launched, the stations will identify specific events and rotate the responsibility for covering those events. The stations can always choose to staff events with crews if the station feels the pool coverage will not be adequate for its needs. The agreement will be primarily used to cover routine court hearings, news conferences and public meetings.
“This will allow both stations to better utilize our talented journalists,” says FOX19 News Director Steven Ackermann in the press release. “Each day, we find ourselves with multiple journalists sitting in a courtroom or attending a news conference that could be recorded by one station and shared with the other.”

WHAS Crusade for Children Raises 42K

A special telethon for the WHAS Crusade for Children had raised $42,146 as of early Tuesday, Crusade president and chief executive officer Dawn Lee said.

“We felt it (the telethon) went really well, especially for the first one” specifically for the Crusade’s endowment fund, Lee said.

She said more pledges are expected before the books are closed on the telethon.
