NBC4's Twitters

To all those naysayers who questioned whether TV journalists could translate their keen sense of self-importance to the Internet, we have some news. In fact, recent developments suggest NBC 4 may be abandoning production of their time-consuming television news broadcast altogether to pursue Web activities full-time.

WHIO's Weekend Sportscaster Gone

Margaret Brosko likes to tell the stories, not be one.

"It's not about me," Brosko said Thursday, Oct. 23, after confirming that this will be her last weekend as a sports anchor after three years at WHIO-TV (Channel 7). "The best part of this job is telling the stories.

"It has been great in Dayton, a market where fans value the stories of high school, college and pro athletes. I've been in areas where they only cared about high schools, or college or the pros, but not all three.

TV Switch Already a Pain for Kentuckians

The pains of the switch to digital television already are apparent, a few months before it happens.

Kentucky residents have been calling stations with general questions, but some are now questioning why their recently purchased digital converter boxes won't pick up popular stations such as CBS affiliate WKYT-27.

It turns out it's not the box, it's the antenna.

He departed in mid September when KPLR and Local TV’s KTVI announced that they would both work out of KPLR headquarters and share resources, and KTVI boss Spencer Koch was given overseeing duties at both stations. Chris Bailey's Goodbye Message...Again

Well... my reunion tour of WKYT is over with and now it's time to get back to my normal job in Huntington. The past few days have been amazing for me as I could have never imagined my coming back would cause such a stir with the KYT viewers. I am truly touched by the volume of e-mails and calls the station has received this week hoping I was back for good. While I am sure the majority of those people do not read this blog... I want to say thanks to each of them anyway.

For John Boel This Too Will Pass - From the 'Ville Voice

John Boel’s DUI arrest is not unique among new anchors. Many of the writers who’ve commented on this site have expressed either empathy for Boel or hope that he loses his job. I found a similar situation in New Orleans that shows a station exhibited some compassion while dealing firmly with the matter.

See if this sounds familiar. Norman Robinson is one of the top anchors in the New Orleans market, 17 years in the chair at WDSU, and known as an agressive reporter and take-no-prisoners interviewer. He’d been in the middle of stories like Hurricane Katrina, and is known for an emotional reaction when he interviewed racist politician David Duke.

On a June Saturday, Robinson crashed his personal vehicle, got out of his car, and pissed on the ground. This occurred in sight of a police officer. He blew a .131 on a breathalyzer. So what did the station do?

First, Robinson took a leave of absence for just over a month. Then he returned to work, but went another month before going back on the air. That was in August. On the night he returned, he expressed his apology on the air. And now he seems to have put the episode behind him, and WDSU has salvaged the career of one of its stars.

WDSU, by the way, is a Hearst station, the same ownership group as WLKY. It looks like it’ll be awhile before we know if Boel can work his way back to the air.

For Robinson, it took two months.

Columbus Dispatch Columnist Says Viewers Don't Miss the CW

Maybe as a TV critic I shouldn't admit this, but I have no idea what's happening on 90210.

Or Gossip Girl, America's Next Top Model or Everybody Hates Chris.

In my defense, I'm not totally to blame.

Like many other cable customers in central Ohio, I subscribe to Time Warner. For two weeks, the area's largest cable provider hasn't carried the CW, home to these and other shows.

Channel Blackouts May Not be Over

More station blackouts may be looming for cable subscribers here and across the country, industry experts warn.

The recent loss of LIN TV stations, including Dayton's WDTN-TV Channel 2, from Time Warner Cable's lineup is only the latest skirmish between cable operators and television stations that want money for allowing cable operators to retransmit their programming.

Confusion in LIN Markets Over Time Warner Blackout

Viewers are equal parts confused, irritated and angry that LIN and Time Warner Cable (TWC) failed to reach a retransmission consent agreement late last week, resulting in 15 LIN stations being blacked out on Time Warner systems. TWC handed out some 50,000 antennas over the weekend to help viewers get the local picture. Many found the old-school technology insufficient. “Watching the Colts on Rabbit Ears yesterday was terrible but at least we got to watch it,” one viewer wrote to WISH Indianapolis.

Smarter Strategies With Talent Blogs

If you take a look at a typical blog on a television news web site, you'll find a familiar pattern to the posts. The anchor or reporter starts out with a flurry of posts where she dutifully chronicles all the exciting exploits of her day. A few viewers might weigh in with supporting comments and little mini-discussions can ensue. Then, things start getting busy around the newsroom and the posts become less frequent. Before you know it, the posts get shorter until they dwindle to a once-a-month entry with just a few sentences.

This problem is not the reporter's fault. She is a busy person with a crazy schedule and blogs like these take time. The problem lies with how the blog is set up and run. Far too many stations implement a flawed plan that dooms talent blogs to failure.
